There is no denying that we are our own worst critic. We nit-pick and dissect and notice E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G. We might even make up stuff in our heads about ourselves that isn’t ever really there.
CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM
Our deepest insecurities can eat away at us. But scrutinizing ourselves can serve a positive purpose, as long as we don’t get too carried away with criticizing ourselves to death. Noticing our own shortcomings can help:
1. Make us aware of our faults instead of being oblivious to them
2. Help us strive to overcome and do better by strengthening our weaknesses
3. Gives us a bar to measure against so we can recognize when we’re making improvements
CHEER YOURSELF ON
But constantly criticizing yourself and picking apart areas you feel you fall short or want to improve upon can – in of itself – be a weakness!
Never being satisfied and never applauding your own accomplishments is also a very unhappy place to live inside your head. That means that even when you make improvements, make progress, move forward in life, you’ll never be able to recognize it or enjoy the progress you’re making.
By always thinking you need to do better (even when you actually DO do better), you don’t ever celebrate the little wins.
SUCCESS TAKES BOTH
In order to become a better person mentally, emotionally and physically, you have to recognize where your weaknesses are.
But in order to move forward, strengthening weaknesses, taking baby steps progressing towards your goals and becoming braver, stronger, healthier, fitter and more resilient, you have to be able to give yourself a huge pat on the back as well/
It takes being both your worst critic AND biggest cheerleader to embrace and relish in your progress and overall transformation in to the person you’re striving to become.
