“Your word is your bond.”

When you set a goal – as we rapidly approach the biggest goal-setting day of the year – you are, in a sense making a commitment, a promise, a pact with yourself.

But how much do you trust that you will keep the promises you make to yourself this New Year’s? Will you commit to follow through and complete what you are now saying you’ll set out to do in 2025?

Ask yourself this question: how much do you trust yourself that you will keep your promise and follow through with what you say you will accomplish this year?

BUILDING TRUST IN YOURSELF

We’ve heard throughout our lives over and over that relationships are built on trust–again applying this to relationships with others. But what about our relationship with ourselves and what does this have to do with fitness goals?

Well, considering that you are the closest person to you that you know, and that you are the only one who can ensure that you do all the things you can on a daily basis to help you reach your fitness goals, it’s crucial that you are able to trust yourself.

Do you trust yourself enough to:

• Cultivate and maintain healthy relationships with other positive people for support

• Choose healthy behaviors on a daily basis that will lead to a better quality of life

• Trust that you will keep your promises, follow through with what you say you’re going to do and reach your goals

• Make the decision regarding healthy choices that will help you progress

BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN COUNT ON YOURSELF

If someone else that you depend on lets you down over and over again, making and breaking promises, you will learn that you can’t depend on that person for certain things.

And in order for you to be successful with your fitness goals, you have to be able to count on you and trust that you’ll fulfill your promises you make to yourself. You need to know that you can trust in yourself that you will succeed.

Here are a few things you can do to start rebuilding trust in yourself:

1. Don’t bite off more than you can chew I’ve mentioned this in past articles, but it is important that you set small, achievable goals at first. It might not seem like a big deal, but this will help you establish a foundation of trust which will lead to tackling bigger goals.

2. You are (or should be) the most significant relationship Your relationship with yourself is without a doubt the most crucial and influential relationship you will ever have.

Because you spend every waking (and sleeping) hour with yourself, your relationship with yourself dictates the kinds of relationships you have and how you interact with everyone else, and with everything else you come in contact with: family, friends, your job, how you handle stress, food, exercise, hobbies, habits, etc.

All of it is dictated first by your relationship with yourself.

3. Be good to yourself I will never understand why we allow ourselves to treat ourselves so poorly in the form of negative self-talk, abusive thoughts and self-destructive thought processes that can lead to self-sabotaging behavior.

We wouldn’t dream of allowing someone else to say the things we sometimes say or think to ourselves, or do the things we sometimes do to ourselves that could be considered abuse or mistreatment, nor would we treat others in that way (hopefully!).

Be mindful of what you think, what you say and, in general, how you treat yourself. And if you make a promise to yourself, don’t lie or break your promise and, thus, your self-trust.

BE YOUR OWN ROCK

You will always need to depend on yourself to be able to follow through with any promise, any commitment, you make – no matter how big or small – especially when you want to accomplish a fitness goal.

When you set a goal and commit to that goal, you are basically promising yourself that you will accomplish a task. You need to be able to trust in your strength, abilities and follow-through in order to achieve your fitness goals.
